Play Therapy
Honouring play as the pathway to understanding, healing, and resilience.
Play therapy honours the language of play as a child’s most natural way of expressing, processing, and making sense of their world—especially when words are not yet available. At Balance and Thrive, play therapy offers a safe, attuned, and developmentally responsive space where children can explore emotions, build regulation, and strengthen relationships through connection-based, trauma-informed care. Rather than focusing on changing behaviour from the outside, this approach gently supports the child from within, following their pace and unique needs. Caregivers are an essential part of the process, helping to carry forward the child’s growth, healing, and resilience beyond the therapy room.
Talk Therapy
Supporting teens through change, stress, and self-discovery
Adolescence is a time of growth, identity, and increasing independence—but it can also bring overwhelm, uncertainty, and emotional intensity. Counselling offers a safe, respectful space where teens can explore their experiences, make sense of what they’re feeling, and feel truly heard without judgment.
Using a trauma-informed, neurobiologically grounded, and developmentally responsive approach, support is tailored to each adolescent’s unique needs. Rather than focusing only on symptoms, the work centres on understanding what’s beneath them—whether that’s anxiety, low mood, peer stress, or challenges with identity and belonging.

Family Play Therapy
Strengthening connection within the family system
Family play therapy at Balance and Thrive focuses on deepening understanding, strengthening relationships, and supporting more connected ways of being together. Within a safe, guided space, family members are supported to share their experiences, improve communication, and move through challenges with greater compassion and clarity.
Grounded in a trauma-informed and relational approach, this work looks beyond surface behaviours to understand the needs and patterns within the family system. Together, we gently support shifts that foster connection, co-regulation, and a greater sense of safety within the home—creating space for each family member to feel seen, heard, and valued.
One-On-One Caregiving / Parenting Support
Supporting caregivers while they support their children
At Balance and Thrive supporting children means supporting the caregivers who walk alongside them every day. Parenting can be deeply meaningful—and at times, overwhelming. This space offers caregivers an opportunity to slow down, reflect, and feel heard without judgment.
Together, we explore both the challenges and the strengths within your parenting journey, while building practical, responsive strategies that align with your child’s unique needs and your values as a caregiver. Grounded in a trauma-informed, developmentally responsive, and relational approach, this work focuses on strengthening connection, increasing confidence, and supporting you in creating a home environment where both you and your child can thrive.
Parent Workshops
Parenting can feel deeply meaningful—and at times, incredibly challenging. These workshops offer a supportive space to pause, reflect, and build understanding of your child, yourself, and the relationship between you.
Grounded in a trauma-informed, neurobiologically responsive, and developmentally attuned approach, workshops focus on what sits beneath behaviour—helping shift from “What’s wrong?” to “What does my child need?”
Together, we explore practical, compassionate ways to respond that support regulation, connection, and resilience.
Play Therapy
The Importance of Play
Play is a child’s natural way of understanding their world. It supports emotional expression, problem-solving, and connection—helping children build confidence and feel safe to explore, learn, and grow.
What is Play Therapy?
Play therapy uses play as a child’s primary language, allowing them to express feelings, process experiences, and work through challenges in a safe, developmentally appropriate way. Grounded in a trauma-informed and attachment-focused approach, it supports emotional regulation, resilience, and connection.
How long does play therapy take?
Session length is typically 30–50 minutes. The overall length of therapy varies for each child depending on their needs, goals, and lived experiences. Some children experience meaningful change within a shorter period of time, while more complex or longstanding challenges may take longer. Progress is always guided by the child’s pace and readiness, within a safe and supportive relationship.
How is family involved in play therapy?
Caregivers are a vital part of a child’s healing process. At Balance and Thrive, we believe meaningful change happens through connection and collaboration.
Depending on the child’s needs, family involvement may include regular caregiver check-ins, support with home strategies, and opportunities to strengthen connection within the parent–child relationship. In some cases, family sessions or parent-focused support may also be recommended.
Who provides play therapy?
Play therapy is provided by licensed mental health professionals with specialized training in child development, therapeutic play, and clinical practice. At Balance and Thrive, care is delivered by a Registered Social Worker and Registered Play Therapy Intern with advanced training in trauma-informed, attachment-focused, and neurobiologically attuned approaches.
At Balance & Thrive
Sessions are tailored to each child using creative, play-based approaches such as storytelling, art, and imaginative play. Caregivers are supported along the way to strengthen understanding, connection, and lasting change.
